Knowing the Components of Your Teeth

Human teeth are a set of machinery which are responsible for cutting and breaking down food particles by cutting, chewing and crushing, in preparation for swallowing. Humans have four types of teeth: incisors, canines, premolars, and molars.

However, that is not what we are focusing on in this article. Here, we want to look at the four major components of human teeth and their functions.

Enamel:

Enamel is a hard-calcareous substance that covers the teeth. It is the outermost part of the teeth, and the strongest substance of the body, stronger and harder than the bone. It is one of the major tissues that make up a tooth. It varies in colour, from light yellow to grayish white. It is prone to damage if the teeth are not adequately taken care of.

Dentine:

Dentine is the teeth substance between the enamel and the dental pulp chamber. Dentine, just like the Enamel, is harder and stronger than the bone, but not as strong as the enamel. It is protected by the Enamel and can be more prone to damages if exposed. It serves as a protective layer for the crown of the teeth.

Cementum:

Cementum is a specialized bony substance of connective tissue which is responsible for covering the root of the teeth. It is also responsible for attaching the teeth to the jawbone. It is ordinarily light yellow, and it is well known as the thickest substance at the root apex of the teeth. Its primary role is to provide stability for the teeth.

Dental Pulp:

Dental Pulp is one of the major components of the teeth which is responsible for the transportation of blood to the teeth and to the nerves and soft tissues. It is the central component of the teeth and is responsible for keeping your teeth alive. It is often called the nerve of the teeth.
